The "jeep cap" was first issued by the US Army in February 1942 during World War II. The purpose of the jeep cap was to be worn under heavy combat helmets to provide soldiers with both extra padding and warmth. The jeep cap was originally knitted close to the head, with a six-stitch "starfish pattern" on top (presumably to support the webbing suspension in the helmets), with a cuff that came out of the top centre of the brim like a V, and around the rest of the cap, which soldiers could pull down over their ears for even more warmth. Although the hat was made specifically to be worn under the steel helmet, it became very popular among soldiers on its own because of its casual and relaxed look. Features: 100% wool.
